Acupuncture Consultation

What Happens During The Initial Consultation?

If you don't know what to expect from an acupuncture treatment you may feel nervous about trying it and seeing a new health care provider can be worrying. The information on this page will give you an idea of what to expect during the initial consultation and treatment.

Prior to your consultation, you will be asked to fill out a registration form, and details of your medical history. At your appointment, first we will talk for a while. We will go over your health history and the reason you are in clinic. Next I may take your pulses at your wrists and look at your tongue, these are important diagnostic tools we use in Chinese medicine so however tempted you may be, it's best not to brush your tongue before I've looked at it. And finally we will do the acupuncture. Generally my patients are on the treatment couch for 20 to 30 minutes. It's very relaxing and most people take a nap.

Each treatment is aimed at the root of your condition as well as at your symptoms. This approach helps with not only resolving your problem, it also enhances your overall feeling of wellness.

Medical History

You may be asked about:

• how long you have had the problem

• how it may have started

• what factors may be stopping it getting better

• what aggravates and relieves the symptoms

• the impact on your daily activities

• any medical tests and investigations and the results of these tests

• past history of similar problems

• other illnesses, hospitalisations or operations

• your lifestyle, diet and exercise

Physical Examination and Diagnosis

The Physical examination will depend on your presenting condition. We may need to check for muscle imbalances, your posture or carry out functional tests  and check your range of movement.

Treatment

You may be asked to remove some items of clothing, we use towels or sheets to preserve your modesty and only the areas being treated are exposed during your treatment. When I have a treatment I like to wear comfortable lounge-wear or sweat pants and a loose top, clothes that can easily be adjusted without having to remove them. You will usually be asked to lie down on a couch but acupuncture can be administered whilst seated if required.

Acupuncture is done at specific points on your body, the points used may not necessarily be close to where you experience pain or discomfort. For example, if you have headaches I may use points on the foot or hand.  You will then be left to relax for approximately 15 - 20 minutes, although this may be shorter or longer depending on the condition being treated.
